Something that has bugged me fo ages!

Hi,

I built my own computer about 6 months ago and since then I have had trouble with my connection when playing games online, the games (all games I play) will freeze or for instance if I am playing quake3 online I get "connection interupted" every 3-4 minutes for a 5 seconds and this is like everytime I play.

I dont get this however when I play offline or other ethernet (which is no an option ATM). I originally had windows XP pro and I tried changing all the settings on my modem/router (belkin) and nothing seemed to work, I then installed XP home after a re-formatting the whole drive and bought a new netgear router yesterday and it sill wont work.

I have a Dell laptop which has it own built-in wireless card and it runs fine in any games online (expect it over heats alot).

I have mirroed the wireless settings from the laptop and the PC still wont work.

Creative 24bit soundcard
USB network adaptor by netgear (used to have a belkin network card befoe this)
80gb barracuda HDD]
netgear DG834EG router

I am more focused now on changing the hardware on the machine as I have changed all I can software side.

Is it possible that the mobo could be faulty and casuing the problem? the thing is I can download a file over the net with no drop of speed at all but in games my ping shoots up and the game stops for a few, maybe 4-5 seconds.

Ok, I have a wireless connection on my PC also, and the problem I think is the wireless USB adapter, because usually they are very weak. I have a wireless PCI card, with an antenna and everything, and I play online games all the time with no lag. I would suggest buying a wireless PCI card and trying that out.

I used one previous to my USB, I had a belkin router and PCI card and the problem was still there, that lead me to a Netgear bundle (router/USB adaptor) and I still have the same trouble. I dont want to spend anymore money on hardware until I have gotten a second opinion on what it may be thats casuing this and where to look to fix it.
 
Now I have anohter problem, I decided to remove some expansion cards out of my machine to eliminate them as being the cause, I uninstalled the sound card and removed it, I then rebooted and the problem was still there, then i moved on to the graphics card drivers, I uninstalled them and re-booted and my keyboard and mouse fail to work by the time it gets to the user logon menu, any ideas how to actually log in? I have tried 'asly know configguration that worked' and safe mode but nothing works still and I cant get passed logon screen.
 
Its sooooo frustrating, even with and 11mbs PCI card it should still pick up enough of a signal to run games.

I cant put my finger on what this might be, I have posted everywhere on the internet with no solution.

I highly dout your internet connection is actully higher then that for it to matter.
 
^really? i strongly beg to differ. why is it i download @ 100-150 kbps max, when at the source i can get 300
 
so you have about 2mb connectio right? and your network card can work at upto 11mbps? so that means your card can more than manage your connection, or as far as I know that should be correct.
 
why is there 54mbps, and 108mbps. i can switch my 11mbps to 2mbps and my internet is completely unusable. there is a huge difference....
and my dsl is rated at 400mbps, which is not megabytes per second... mbps and mb/sec are not the same thing....

roughly, 1 Mbps =1000 Kbps =0.125 MB/sec = 125 KB/sec
so...
11mbps = 1.375 MB/sec
54mbps = 6.75 MB/sec
108mbps = 13.5 MB/sec
^just as an example, because in the real world 11mbps will not allow downloads for 1.375 mb/sec :(

Lol, you have 400mb DSL connection:eek: , BTW the reason they have 54mb and 108mb routers is because that is the network speed and the rate you can send information over the network, it cant make your physical internet connection any quicker but the faster you buy the faster you can share files on local computers.
 
edited: ill just take this out and keep to myself. i know that i understand what im talking about... btw, with all the acronyms i typed, i meant 400kbps dsl. anywho, back to the original topic.
