sony vs. lite-on

i would go with the sony becuase i have never heard of lite-on and the sony looks better, but thats just me, im probably wrong really!!

I'd go with the Lite-On.
Lite-On is a generic brand, which means chances are most name brand drives are Lite-On drives badged with a name brand.
Sony is it's own brand, but if it's the same speed you're only paying extra for the name. Plus the Lite-On comes with PowerDVD and Nero. There isn't anything about the sony which makes me think it's worth that much more than the Lite-On.

If it were me I'd go with the Lite-On drive.

Sony DRU720 Ive heard lots of very contradicting things about the DRU710/DRU720 although many suggest that the DRU720 is essentially a remarked LiteOn 1673 (which is not a good thing since recent LiteOn DVD burners havent been stellar by any means). Although Ive included this drive, better or at least equal drives can be found for less (or similar prices)
Personally, i wouldnt go with either, but seeing as that doesnt help, go with the sony

My DVD burner is a Lite-on drive. It works fine. It wasn't an arm and a leg. Trust me, you go with sony you're just paying extra for the name.

I did some looking up on google. Even sony uses rebadged Lite-on, Plextor and Benq drives.

So to answer your question you're probably looking at the exact same drives here, but one has a sony badge on the front. I wouldn't doubt that the sony is a rebadged lite-on.

There are only a hand full of CD/DVD/burner manufacturers, lite-on being one of them. If there is a name brand on it like sony I guarantee you it's rebadged and made by one of these generic manufacturers.

Its cheaper for sony to buy generic drives and put the sony name on them than it is for them to actually make the drives. So like I said, you're just paying extra for the sony name plate.

Save your money, eliminate the middle man, and go with the Lite-On drive.

These Beige and Black NEC drives are very good. Its predecessor was #2 in Praetor's list of reccomendations. And im sure alot fo people here will vouch for NEC's quality of drives.

Deffinetly get the Lite-On, theres a $23 difference there. I have a Lite-On DVD-Rom and my friend has a Lite-On DVD+/-RW drive and they both work great. I would look into a black drive since i think beige isnt that good looking.

I've had two lite-on burners and only got rid of the first so I could burn DL, but they are great drives and I've burned anything and everything

i personaly try to go with the more expensive brand name stuff. sure it more expensive, but ive never had any kind of failure or compatability problem.
so, SONY!

Well i used to have a Memorex DVD Burner that i bought for $120 about 6 months ago. Its a well-known and expensive brand, but what do you know! it stopped working a few months after having it. I have Lite-On and they have never failed me, and i would go with one of those.
