sorry - stupid n00b question

This is a bit of a debate between Dad and I about my Information Processing and Management homework. It calls for the description of a piece of hardware, and Dad (who works in the IT industry) considers a laptop in itself to be a piece of hardware. I, on the other hand, feel that each individual component should be considered hardware rather than the laptop as a whole.

So who's right? Should I just play it safe and talk about the CPU of the laptop? (which by the way would result in the same information being communicated)

Thanks heaps!

Yes...

A computer is a peice of hardware. A video card is a peice of hardare. A processor is a peice of hardware.

I don't know if a system(monitor keyboard and mouse) could be considered a PEICE, but a laptop is one peice, so why couldn't it be a peice of hardware? I mean everything is intergrated and all...

I'm not sure whether I agree with that...

I think that a single component is a pieve of Hardware, i.e, RAM, Graphics card...

If you think about it, a PC is bunch of components put together.

Anyway, that's my view.

anything that you can pick up, has mass, touch, feel, taste (if you really want) is Hardware....and then obviously you know what software it.

A whole system...thats tricky...I'd personally refer to a system as a collection of hardware since I'm so use to putting them together myself, but at the same time...most laptops are built to certain specs depending on their models, so the whole system could be considered hardware in-and-of its self. It's on the fense...just depends on how much detail you go into in your homework to explain it well that it's considered hardware

You're both right, it all falls in the Hardware category. If you want to get into technicalities, then your dad's lingo should be system, and your's should be components. Both falls into the hardware title.

why dont you just write about something from......the HARDWARE STORE!
Yeah, that's very true. The coined term "hardware store" was about about hammers and screwdrivers, but over the decades, they're labeled as "tools". A computer can be considered a tool, a calculator and even a pencil. All this politically correct mumbo-jumbo gives me a headache... :o

Well RAM and GPUs all have their own components, so you contradict yourself. I believe that a laptop as a whole would be considered a piece of hardware. But I also believe that it is all relative. So, if you want to call it hardware it is your choice. There is no right and wrong that I know of.

I agree a laptop is a piece of hardware and any kind of card is hardware. I hope though that he doesn't say that XP is hardware
Anybody that calls XP hardware needs a smack.
