Sorry to bother the computer savvy for such a trivial topic...RAM.

Can someone please tell me if there is anyway to increase the RAM beyond 512mb (there's only one empty slot for 256mb of RAM) for in my Dell Inspiron 1000 (i.e. external RAM or a program). I am trying to run Star Wars Galaxies. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only way to increase physical RAM is to install another RAM stick, you cant add external RAM and a program cant add more ram. But there are memory optimizers that clear up your memory by moving it to the page/swap file. To sum it up, you can get more free ram via optimizers, but you cant get past 512MB unless you add another physical stick of memory or replace the one you have now with a higher capacity.

My internet's acting up tonight so I can't do much research. I don't know how demanding that game is, but I'm not even sure if more RAM would help much. That's your bottom of the barrel laptop as you probably know.

Now, it seemed fairly new so I see no reason you couldn't upgrade to say 1GB, but I've not read the limits from the manual. But yeah, just get a larger chip from somewhere and replace what you got.

I believe my system is optimized to its full potential (no startup programs, defragged, ect.) I suppose I would need to run the program on another computer.

I tried messing with the virtual memory but the program didn't run either. Is there nothing I can do?

Assuming that you have windows XP, press CTR+ALT+DEL and tell us how much physical memory you have and how much is free.

I think the computer only upgrades to 512mb (I don't think I can put a larger chip in it, but I'm not sure) and shares that with the video mem.

You should really close out of some programs that are running, thats probably why it wont let you run the game. Start>run>msconfig and disable things that you dont need.

I'm not sure what alot of these things are like services, extension (in WIN.INI).
You dont want to make changes there, only in the "servcices" and "Startup" tabs.
