sound card

hey,

i was just wondering what is the benefit, if any, to having a sound card instaid of using the onboard sound?

it really depends on what onboard you have (Soundstorm and Azailia are very good and they are onboard). AC97 has less quality, and generally doesn't support all the fancy effects (ie EAX2).

i have the new asus a8n board and it has 8.1 onboard sound

Having more channels doesnt make it a better and you've just got the Realtek ALC850 ... which i believe is 16bit ... de-facto highend standard now is 24bit sound

sound card doesnt use your mobo resources unlike onboard sound
