hey guys hows it hanging¿ i haven't posted anything in a while and now i need some help. so on this other site im a member on i have placed in my signature "if you need computer help message me". so just my luck a user does message me for computer help. now he has a sound problem on his laptop. the sound stopped working a few days ago. now ive been telling him what to do over msn, and hes been doing everything ive told him to. first i asked him

-is the volume muted (he responded no)
-are the speaker on (responded yes)

so then i told him to to an add new hardware scan and he took a screen shot of the list of devices installed and the sound card was installed and working correctly but i told him to update driver and he did. but it still doesnt work now i dont know what else to tell him ive told him to plug in external speakers or headphones/earphones (he hasnt done this yet) but im all out of idea's and i cant think of what could be the problem it doesnt seem to be conflicting with anything unless its conflicting with the external mouse (usb) the only other idea that i have is to reformate the laptop but im not gonna do it for him. so if anyone has any ideas on what could be the problem or any advice/suggestions on how to fix the problem please post.

thank you in advance

One idea that pops up right away is the sound settings in Windows or the sound card simply quit. If the volume in the Windows sound mixer is down too low or muted there(providing sound was controlled elsewhere) that will quiet things down fast. The idea of a now dead card sounds possible too since a defect in a new card can give out at any time. An older card can simply quit right in the middle of something. A substitute card of the same make and model know to be working would show if one or the other is needed.

Have that person update the bios to see that helps along with downloading the updated drivers from the support site. Checking the present bios settings if someone went in there to see if the onboard is enabled is one thought to add to that. Hopefully the audio chip didn't simply go there.

thats not a bad idea to update the BIOS and heck just update all the fireware for the laptop. i highly doubt it that it got disabled from the BIOS because it picks it up the audio controller in the device manager, but its possible cause that did happen to me with my usb the onboard usb got disabled from the BIOS

If the bios lost a little programming just like clearing the cmos the defaults would be seen. Where the laptop may or may not have audio active by default a glitch there may have disabled it. Let's hope it something easy like that needing an update or a setting got bumped somehow. The last thing you want there is to find that the chip on the board went.

well thats the last thing this guy needs is for the chip to have went. like you said it might have gotten disabled or need a software update(this is what im hoping it needs). the only other thing i can think of is to reformate the laptop but that may or may not fix the problem.

here is a pic of his add new hardware device manager its not that clear but you can see it

If you knew the model number you could pick it out from Panasonic's page for all Toughbooks seen at http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webap...toreId=11201&catalogId=13051&catGroupId=12871

The main drawback on portable units is that most users simply run the onboard sound. Some will want to get a little more out of adding an expansion card in for a performance and sound quality gain. I think your friend is caught in a bind there with onboard being detected by not working from one of two reasons to think about. One is the wrong drivers may have been installed by mistake intended for a different model. The second is a failed chip even though the device is seen as working. The last stage of the audio went seeing this.

A third idea I would throw in on top is a possble loose connection from wear like a cold solder joint or if you plug in head phones the contacts remained closed after disabling the output to speakers. But the only way to find out just where the problem is would be to bring it in or send it in to someone who services Panasonic models. This would avoid warranty problems if your friend decides to open it up!

Thanks Alot guy you all have been very helpful but this guy right now either figured it out by himself or just doesn't care anymore.

Perhaps he finally found the correct drivers or is slow in responding while making inquiries elsewhere? If he still needs help or has given up either way that would be his headache if he doesn't let you know how things are going.

You might be right. He might have found the correct drivers or his brother fixed it. As far as I know I was the only one he was asking for help.

If he was able to see it fixed with the correct update or his brother found those or something else that worked he may be busy with it and simply forgot that you needed a reply. Wait a few days and see if he gets back to you on it. After that amount of time he wouldn't if it was now working for him. Of course he may be waiting to see if you find something? That's possible!

Since that is an Adobe software you simply buy where they sell it. The Adobe link here off of the home page to the buy page allows you to find stores and vendors according to where you are located. This link besides the home page would be the one to pass aong. http://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/html/index.cfm?event=displayStoreSelector&keyword=photoshop

For some reason if he can't use the link when given to him send him direct to the home page seen at http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/ The top link on the right side is the "buy now" link. It would seem the sound problem saw correction at his end then.

Thats what I told him just buy it at Best Buy or Futureshop and he wont have to worry about anything he will have a legit copy with a legit key

Often when you order online you get a good price break compared to paying the full retail tag for softwares. I know in game shops in shopping malls here you will pay $60-70US retail for a new game out and walk into a Walmart some weeks later to see $38.98 or some other lower prices. When going online the same will be seen at $18-$24 whatever. That's at good sites however.
