Hello! I hope you can help me with a problem that started occurring today.
I have an HP Pavilion dv6 that I bought a few months ago (from a guy online who had just bought it and didn't need it, not from a proper reseller). It has worked fine so far, but today, after being away for a few days, the sound started acting up. When trying to listen to some new songs in iTunes, it froze up. I then tried to restart iTunes, but it then said that iTunes had detected problems with my audio configuration. After reinstalling QuickTime without solving anything, I had a look at the Control Panel and couldn't even play the test tone. I removed the "IDT CODEC" something driver and restarted, and the computer reinstalled the driver and it all worked fine for a while. Now, while listening to a song on Youtube, I opened a rather large Word document, and then the sound switched from my headphones to the internal speakers. I unplugged and replugged the headphone cable several times, and seemed to mess up the audio settings yet again. I once more removed the drivers, rebooted and reinstalled and now it works - for the time being. When the audio disappears, it's all gone from the computer, not just from Youtube or iTunes.
There are 3 audio-related ports on my laptop. One is microphone, and then there are 2 with the headphone symbol. The one next to the mic port (which I'm using) is marked "analogue" in the settings panel, and the other one "3.5 mm". Am I using the wrong port? And why would even a slight strain on the computer (like opening a 350 page Word document) cause the audio to switch? This has happened before, but the audio has never gone away completely. Thanks!
Sorry if I am misusing some terms, English is not my native language.
EDIT: And - it has now happened for the third time! I was again listening to a song on Youtube and opening a text document, and the audio switches from the headphones to the internal speakers. Upon pausing and playing again, the video keeps playing but the computer's sound is entirely deactivated. I have not changed anything major today, other than getting a USB-powered cooling pad to help keep the temperature down. Any ideas, please share them.
