Spare battery question

I was looking to get a spare battery for my HP Pavilion DV7-1135nr laptop.

I found these two on Newegg.com

I know they are both compatible with my laptop and that they are both direct from HP but the tech I was talking to was strongly advising me to go with the standard battery as opposed to the Enviro. The Enviro, which has more life, was going to be my choice but he says that because my laptop came with just the standard battery I should stick with that. Does anyone know if there is any warrant to what he said or if I can just go with the Enviro? They are both compatible with my laptop but he was advising I get the one from the first link as opposed to the one from the second link because my laptop originally came with the one from the first link.

Any info is much appreciated.

If both batteries are 8 cell then one won't have more battery life than the other. If one was 6 cell and the other 8 or 9 cell then yes. Go with the cheaper one.

Sorry, but that's not true. If they were made from the exact same cells, then sure, but battery life is dependent on how much much electric charge the cells have, usually rated in mAh. According to HP's site, the cheaper battery is 2550mAh. I wasn't able to find specs on the Enviro battery on HP's site, but other sites selling the battery advertised it at 7200mAh to 7800mAh. Also, HP advertises it as a "long life battery", indicating that it is superior.

Either battery would work in your laptop fine, so you'd be much better off with the one with the longer life. As to why the HP rep advised against the better battery, I would say that either he just didn't know what he was talking about, or maybe he's told to push the cheaper batteries because they're manufactured by HP (thus more profitable) while the Enviro battery is outsourced to Boston Power. Neither would surprise me.

Also, you can buy the longer life battery on HP's website for cheaper than Newegg.

A laptop battery is just composed of several smaller batteries wired up in series:

The number of cells is just the number of smaller batteries inside of the laptop battery, so the battery above is a six cell battery.

Think of ordinary AA batteries. If we wire six of them up in series and use it to power something, we can think of all of them together as a six cell battery. If we add two more, then it's an eight cell, and of course it's going to have a longer life than the original six cell. But lets consider comparing a six cell battery made of Duracell AA batteries, and one made of cheap off-brand batteries. AA batteries can range from 600mAh to 3000mAh, and I'm sure that if you've ever bought really cheap AA batteries before you've seen that they don't last nearly as long as quality batteries. So two batteries may have the same number of cells, but depending on the quality of those cells one may have a much higher electric charge than the other.
