Speed my internets up

Alright i'm looking to speed up my connection and get rid of my lag problems for playing counter strike source. I live in a dorm at a computer school so sometimes i get really bad lag spikes making me unable to play. I'm assuming the lag comes from all the people downloading/uploading/playing games. I have a wired connection just like every other room in the dorm but i had an idea. There are wireless routers set up throughout each floor. I've measured it out and the nearest one is about 50-60 feet from my room. I was wondering if i bought a long enough ethernet cord if i could secretly run it to the wireless router plug it into that and hopefully get a faster connection. Would this help any? I thought it might because the wireless routers don't get too much traffic in the dorms.

Any info on this working or not is much appreciated.

Also if anyone has any other ideas about how i can get a faster connection with less lag it would be much appreciated!

one more thing is if i bought like a cat6 cord instead of cat5 would that help at all?

Ethernet would make it faster and then you would get a direct connection and not compete for wireless with the other students.

You want CAT5 cable.
 
Something about 'secretly' running an ethernet cable to your schools wireless router is a bad idea... You honestly think they would not discover this, honestly?
 
hey pal i didn't ask for you sass so you can just shut your mouth. Its quite simple really our floor has ceiling tiles so i would just run the cable at like 3 am and put all the ceiling tiles back. And how would they notice? As far as the network goes i am just one person so i wouldn't be using up excessive amounts of bandwidth cause i would be the only person plugged into the wireless router and since no body uses the wireless in the dorms i really doubt they would notice that. The only physical thing you would be able to see is about 2-3 inches of cord that will come through the hole in the ceiling and plug into the wireless router just like the cord that is already plugged into it.
 
I worked for IT at my school before graduating and i can tell you this you will be caught and if you are caught most schools will ban you from computer access on campus... If your school is strict enough you will be expelled as if you read the computer use policy most say its totally illegal to hook wired into a wireless router as thats not their point. Have you even looked i would be shocked if your router had ports on it as most are wireless gateways not access points and just have the one connection from the ethernet for the wireless broadcast. Do this at your own risk and know you are pushing your luck
 
i have checked and yes there are actually like 3 or 4 ports. But alright if that will not work then what would you recommend i do? Its starting to get a little ridiculous because i can't even hardly search the web at a decent speed. Extremely frustrating.
 
welcome to my life for a long time.. They probably dont have enough for all the students. At peak times you will see it. The only thing i can tell you is check with yoru it at my school if you paid for it you could have cable internet in your room not sure how yours does it.
 
short of getting your own internet connection i think your SOL... i dont even think running a wire straight to the wireless routers switch would fix it.
