Speed over capacity

Hi there, my cousin wanted to get a new computer from Gateway and he asked me if he should get a 1000GB (7200 rpm), or get a cheaper (-$40)
300GB (10,000 Rpm) for his computer. So I want to know what you guys think.

Oh and before I forget he is making a gaming computer.

If he's going to use more than 300GB than the answer is go with the 1TB drive. It's performance will probably be close to that of the 10k RPM drive, I think the 10k RPM drive will perform slightly better though. It's really a toss up, if your cousin isn't going to need more than 300GB for the foreseeable future then the 10k 300GB is the way to go...... is this 300GB drive SCSI? I just checked and it doesn't look like Raptors come in 300GB yet. I'd go with the 1TB drive if that's the case, SCSI gets expensive and is a pain for a home system.

I had the same dilemma as u there m8, but I took the 10k RPM drive for the comp - windows/games and other programs, and I decided to buy a good external HDD. This is especially good if it has multi-interfacing capabilities with it including eSATA and USB 2.0. eSATA is very good as it allows for virtually "similar" speeds to what a normal internal hard drive would get.

I think its a much better compromise because this way I can take it round and share songs/videos with friends as well especially nowadays, with download limits being the limiting factor with internet usage, It certainly helps "share the goodies" around!!!

I bought the Lacie d2 quattro 500Gb - good size, very versatile good price, and well reccommended!!

hope this helps ya m8!!!

The 10,000 rpm hard drive obviously run at what feels like almost twice as fast, so if he isn't going to use more than 300, i would go with that. even still, he could always buy an external hard drive and keep the 10,000 rpm.
