Ok some of your computers may be In some need of a serious tune up job as well as mine or maybe I just feel that way. All that I'm doing here is having ppl post up various ways that you can speed you computer up and hopefully this will also help others in need of a speed up.

First of all I do regular spyware scans which really help out alot cause all those nasty lil buggas can slow the computer down. Then I defrag as often as needed. I also clean my prefetch every so often. Those are just some basics but its still not enough. Can you guys post more ways to speed a system up???

Like I said hopefully this will helps others not just me.

norton internet security... if you have norton internet securtiy 2005 or 2006 GET RID OF IT... trust me, it slows down the pc, get a different anti-virus, i recomen NOD32 it has never failed me and my PC runs WAY faster... also the baisics like getting rid of programs that are running in the backround... on my taskbar that shows backround programs that are running the only thing i c is volume control and NOD32 antivirus... WAY fast than when i had like 10 things...

but yea Norton take up alot of memory for a backround program...

Yes the common misconsemption people have is the more Av you have, the faster you comp goes. WRONG. As stated by Encore4more, use nod32 or antiVir.

Anything I do to help performance can be found via Google as this is how I find my information :). There are a few good sites out there.

How about?

Running Disk Cleanup (in XP)
Getting rid of stuff you don't need ;)
Archiving music/photos/videos to CDs or DVDs
Removing drivers of stuff you no longer plug in yor PC

and... dusting

Go with this once your computer is clean of viruses/spyware.I would also suggest using a registry cleaner and tweaker's website at http://tweaker.se

All the tweaker software, all the registry cleaners, and all the other "speed-up my computer" software, is more likely to slow it down then help. Here's two simple things you can do though.

1) Hit Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. Unistall everything you don't use anymore.

2) Hit Start | Run. Type "msconfig" (no quotes). Choose the startup tab, and uncheck everything you don't need to run. This pretty much constitutes everything, but you can google specific items you're curious about.

simple answer to speed up windows, format every month, its what i do, well, not quite every month, i can stand it not performing well, because of software, hardware i can take being slow, cos i dont have any cash to upgrade, but when its software induced, out somes that boot disk to format.

tuneup utilities 2006 / registry mechanic... i use both and my pc flyyyy's, when things start getting slow i clean my registry and defrag it... it runs mucho better

Woah, thats alot of work, nothing I would recommend people.

You should know that a well maintained os can run just as fast a year after the install.

I use AVG free...
is it recommended that i shift to Nod32 or antivir, just to get a faster pc?
I use AVG it's good and doesn't slow down your computer to much.... But a pc upgrade will always be good....

far far too often. You just need to learn to manage your os better. I could never keep formatting, some much hassel. When you use a pc seriously it is not feasable to do that

Are you mad? A format almost every month. I've done alot of formatting in my time with computers, but not that much.
