What is the best way to speed up my computer?

Another HDD?
A new processor?
More Ram?

GPU: Powercolor Radeon HD 6850 Single Slot Edition

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3

Processor: Intel Core i5-2500k CPU @ 3.30GHz 3.60GHz

Ram: 8.00 Gb's

Cooling: 2 stock fans + Fan in GPU + Fan in CPU + Fan in PSU
Average temps GPU:60-70C CPU:50C

HDD: 1 Terabyte @7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s

Built in July-Aug 2011
 
Your specs are pretty good. If you're looking for speed, slap an SSD and a fresh load of Windows in there.

SSD sounds good but i dont want to reinstall windows i have 25 days worth of gameplay into Borderlands 2 and i dont want to lose it or any of my files.

If you put a SSD in there, you would still have to reload windows to it. To get the benefits of the SSD. Back up your system.
 
Can you not use a program like game saver for your games.

An ssd would be give you the biggest performance jump for the least money.
 
Use a SSD and a new install of Windows 8 as Voyager said. Use a Save Backup program and put the back up on a flash drive.
 
Changed my mind going with a HDD because i also need more space to record vids for Youtube and Video games But thanks to all who helped!
 
Another HDD isn't going to speed up anything whatsoever. Unless your current one is operating at like like 90 percent capacity or higher.

Best way to speed up your computer is to simply add more RAM to it.

If you run a lot of applications at once you will notice an overall performance improvement on your system .


Also, clean up Windows. Meaning, disable unnecessary windows features and services you don't use. Leaving unnecessary services running is just another way to get into a computer system... ;)


PS; There are a lot of little *tweaks* and options you can change in Windows to enhance the performance of your machine. A simple Google search can provide you with more information about it .;)

Agreed!

My old system had 6GB DDR2 800, new build has 16GB DDR3 1600. I still have never used more than 5GB's, and that was when I was editing a rather large website in dreamweaver, CS6, and was also poking around in photoshop. Not to mention the normal things, like firefox running several tabs, steam, skype, origin, and so forth.

8GB's should be fine unless he is editing large media files. Then again, an SSD would help in that area as well. :rolleyes:

If you look at the specs for that motherboard you will see it can hold up to 32 GB of system memory. ;). Like i said before up grade the RAM.

The UD3H is a popular model offered by Gigabyte, I'm sure many here will know the specs if they use gigabyte products like I do.

Anything over 8GB's may not help the OP unless he is editing large media files as I said before, he really won't need more than 8GB's. So the SSD route would make the most improvement. That is, if, the video is edited, many youtuber's just upload most of what they record with little to no editing what so ever.

I hate to say it but you really don't know what you're talking about. Yeah it can hold more RAM but there is literally nothing to be gained from doing that.

Think about it this way. If you're hungry and it takes you 4 slices of pizza to fill you up and you're presented with 6 slices of pizza or 50 slices of pizza, will it matter which you chose just for the sake of filling you up? Of course not, you only need 4 slices, so either amount is more than enough. The 50 slices is just going to cost a hell of a lot more even though it does nothing more for you.

Same rule applies to RAM, if you're only going to use so much of it, having way more than you need doesn't do you any good. It wont' make it "faster", it just sits there not being used and being a waste of money.

Yep, absolutely no idea. Putting more RAM in there except for a very few use-cases will do absolutely nothing.

SSD will by far, (several orders of magnitude) give the OP the biggest bang for his buck in terms of speed. Extra RAM in that machine will be an absolute waste and provide an undetectable improvement. It may even slow things down due to an increased and fragmented page file.

Well i dont think more ram would really do the trick if i wanted to speed up my computer, the only purpose for more ram in my case is when im rendering videos in Sony Vegas Pro 12. But anyway like i said before i'll probably just stick with another HDD for Recording videos. Thanks anyway

I love this pizza analogy. :P

Nonetheless, to the OP: if you're really dead-set on getting an HDD, get a WD Velociraptor. If you get anything else, you'll probably notice a very minimal improvement. Even compared to a velociraptor, however, an SSD would be a better option. Why not keep your current HDD for large video files, but load Windows and your programs onto an SSD?
