Spent a minor 600 for college upgrade, wondering about increased performance

I just ordered the new Q6600 through newegg yesterday and a new mobo and power supply to support it, along with ddr2 ram, and im upgrading from ddr ram with a 3.2 p4 with ht, but im keeping the same vid card (x850xt pci express16) and i was wondering if my game performance will have gone significantly up, or is it mostly limited by my video card?

I don't think you'd see a HUGE improvement, but there should be some. Gaming performance is dictated mainly by the video card (unless it is bottlenecked by your CPU).

yeah thats what i was thinking, my computer doesnt even run bad right now, but the college life and looking at everyone with their shiny new laptops makes me want to get a new computer, does the new lga775 support older HSF's? I have a big ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU 120mm fan in there right now, but it works with p4 chips, is there that much of a diff with the new quad core, they have the same socket right?

Without looking it up i am going to take a leap of faith and say the p4 3.2ghz HT processor is most likely lga775. The older p4's and celly's were socket 478 if i am remembering correctly. So if your hsf worked on that p4 it should work fine on the q6600. It is LGA775 as well.

edit: Sorry, curiosity took over, and I retract that statement. They did make the 3.2ghz in lga775 but they also made it in socket 478...so no guarantee that yours will fit perfect, but you have a good chance that it will. You can look at your existing mobo and see what socket it is.

i would actually expect games to run a LOT smoother with the better processor, response time, and just how fresh your system seems is all dictated by your processor

its an lga775 lol, i wouldnt even bother asking haha
its really no problem, i got a hsf with the processor, i thought it was oem but its got a fan too.. i just really have this spiritual connection with my 120mm fan :-)
