I have some cat5 connectors but it requires a special tool to make the connection. the tool was around $30.00. any other suggestion.

next question is related to splicing cat5. i ran cat5 from the basement to the garage. is it ok to just splice with something like wire nuts?

No, you can't just splice with wire nuts. Cat 5 is twisted pair wire. You are only allowed to have about a half inch or so of untwisted wire anymore than that and you take the chance of getting interference. I make my own cables and its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Spend the money on the tool, its well worth it and you'll get your money out of it. However, I have seen it cheaper than 30 bucks. I have Ideal brand but you can buy the off brand for around 20 bucks.
