Spread Spectrum Clocking

i dont' entiurely remember (or understand) what this feature is. i think it has something to due with protection from electromagnetic interference but...hell if i know. anyways, my question is, should i have this enabled on my hard drives?

As far as I know it is a technique to reduce EMI produced by high-speed digital ICs. If the technology exists in your pc, it's in computer chips and is not something you can turn on or off.

The original patent was by Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil during WWII and was intended to prevent jamming of radio-controlled torpedoes. That technology was a dead-end. Current devices work quite differently.

Starman's right, the new Raptor drives have something built into the drives that you can either enable or disable. In tests they found out that when it's enabled, performance slows down, however it didnt make a noticable difference in the amount of radiation it put out.

on both of my hard drives (well, they are identical) while using Hitachi Feature Tool to enable the 3.0Gb/s tansfer rate (SATA II) the other option is "Spread Spectrum Clocking: Enable/Disable" i'm pretty sure i have them both set to disable at the moment, so i shoudl just leave it like that?

I can't help there as I thought there would be no option to turn on or off. I would have thought there was no advantage in turning on other than if you think the EMI is affecting other devices. Could also be some way around FCC regulations (have the capability to meet regs but allow user to turn off for performance).
