Spreading a virus

I just bought a new computer, which Ill be using purely for graduate school. I have an older toshiba which Ive used for the past 4 years, its seen its fair share of videos, music, etc.. and probably has viruses. This may be a stupid question but.....can viruses/worms,etc be transferred between computers through software. i.e. if I install my printer to my new comp using the same disc and with the virus ridden old one, could something be transferred.

im just so paranoid of getting a virus. I can see it already...giving a powerpoint presentation during class and a embarrising popup comes up.

I don't think I've ever heard of a virus being tranferred through a disc which is used to instal something like a printer, so I don't think you'd have to worry about that. Although before you start transferring files through a USB memory stick I'd definitely find an online virus/trojan check, maybe download a free anti-virus and scan the files before they're transferred to your new computer.. But that's taking extra precautions.

A virus can get onto a USB and be transfered that way and also over networks.

Pls do the following and we can help you clean out the virus:

If after that you are still infected, please post a Hijackthis log. To post a Hijackthis log, please do the following:

* Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
* Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
* Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
* Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
* Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
* At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
* Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
* Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
* DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

We will look at your log as soon as we see it, and give you further instructions on how to fix your computer. Most of the time it will involve downloading more programs that will either give us logs to locate the malware or delete those malware.

Once you have posted a HJT Thread DO NOT make any changes to your PC unless the advisor helping you has instructed you to do so!

A virus cannot infect an existing CD or DVD such as a printer driver disk. If, one the other hand, the CD or DVD was created on the infected machined (i.e. a blank disk you burnt files to), then it may be infected.

Memory sticks and floppy disks are another story, however, it is possible for them to be infected just by inserting them into an infected system.
