spxmedia.dll - unremovable spyware

i've seen this dll file pop up several times as spyware after a Norton 2005 scan, but it just can't delete it. obviously some other program is using the file, but i'm not sure which one. if anyone has any idea how i can remove this nuisance, let me know PLEASE. the last thing i need is my sensitive information to be broadcast across the internet. i also ran a hijackthis scan, but i'm not sure if it really applies to this situation. i'll attach it just in case.

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Restart your computer, and post a new Hijackthis log.
 
yeah, i tried to run spysweeper, but it froze several times (even after numerous restarts) and now my norton antivirus isn't working right. at one point before it froze, though, it had 2000+ traces found, which tells me that it stopped on a file that was obviously bad and kept adding to the trace count. i let it run for almost 4 hours and for 3 1/2 of it, the program was scanning the same .tmp file.
 
no can do. my computer has some major issues and can't stay on long enough to run a full anti-virus scan. according to windows error reports, it has a virus that causes it to restart at random times. any thoughts?
 
ok, buzz, i finally managed to get rid of spxmedia.dll by booting in safe mode and manually deleting it. no problems arose when i rebooted normally, so i think i'm pretty much ok now. i appreciate the advice, but spy sweeper just didn't want to work for me.

Close all open windows and browsers, and hit "Fix Checked".

Are you running Norton or Mcafee?
 
Norton and Mcafee are always on. Norton is my anti-virus program and has auto-protect enabled, and Mcafee is my primary anti-spyware, which also has auto-protect enabled.
 
Ahhhhhhhhhhh!

this can't be good...i have a few issues to report here.
1) i have a .dll file named spxcoins.dll that, when deleted, simply reappears. i have a feeling this is a bad sign...
2) the computer restarts at random times...very irritating.

MS Crash Reporting Service is convinced my computer restarts because of either a virus (Spyware.Apropos.C) or because it has an incompatible device driver. thanks in advance for the help.
 
spxcoins.dll is a windows file, why are you trying to delete it?

Download AproposFix to your Desktop: http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe

Restart your computer in Safe Mode

Double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop.
Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop
Run RunThis.bat and follow the prompts

Restart your computer and post the contents of log.txt from the aproposfix folder
