Look around in your bios options. It should be like Legacy IDE/AHCI setting. Set it to AHCI. It might not boot. I am pretty sure johnb35 knows alittle exe you can run that will enable AHCI in windows.

upgraded to 8.1 again does anyone know how to change hdd mode from ide to ahci in reg edit, is it different to win 7?

If you have AHCI enabled in BIOS, Windows installer automatically sets your system up accordingly. The regedit trick only applies if you switch from IDE to AHCI on an existing install.

I have already installed OS, i tried to install with ahci active but it would not boot afterward, i had it working in win 7 by editing the bios restarting which installed drivers then changing the mode in bios, but win 8.1 seems more difficult as the registry is different, is there a simple way to achieve this?
