SSD gained 2gb from WHAT?!

As we know I just installed a new SSD and have been making sure that it's still functioning properly...I would say it's doing great cuz I'm running W7 on it right now and using it :P

My question is, I just turned it on and started downloading small files (Fanspeed, core temp, rainmeter, bit torrent and some images for backgrounds and one rainmeter theme that's small)...After downloading those and installing those on my HDD (not SSD) my SSD file went from 11gb to 13gb used!?!?!??! What the heck happened!? Does Windows 7 expand THAT quickly???? how can I minimize W7 or should I just let it keep growing and growing? (The ssd is 60GB so I'm not freaking out about space, just wondering what's goign on)

any way to cut down on some of that? I know the page file needs to stay and such but at that rate (the SSD has only been in for about 14 hours) the SSD will be filled in a month lol...or is it just doing it cuz it's a new SSD w/ a new OS?

System restore will only save so many restore points, and you can always set it to save less if you want to. Also, with 16GB of RAM, you may be safe decreasing the size of your page file somewhat.

different laptop sorry, I'm running 8gb of ram on this laptop...umm currently I have a 500GB toshiba drive in bay two with W7 on it as well and lots of spare room...I don't really care for restore points because that 500GB is a full backup plus I have a SECOND backup on an external drive so if I can cancel those and reduce page file to slow down the growth of the drive that'd be best...are there ways?

Just to clarify, Windows 7 shouldn't use much more of your drive than it is currently using. I've run W7 on a 40GB hard drive, and it was fine. Unless you seriously come close to running out of space, you probably shouldn't change anything.

I suppose I shouldn't worry for a while then...It's a fresh install onto a 60GB SSD and I am just weary cuz it's a new SSD to me but it's an older SSD...I am not used to tracking how much HDD I've used ;P

From CMD: powercfg -h off

Reboot, and the hibernation file will be deleted (you won't be able to hibernate and the option from the menu will be removed)

Then set a static pagefile of 1-4GB. I am currently using 2GB which works fine.

If you migrated your windows profile from another machine or backup, check your user folder properties to make sure it isn't enormous. Some games, especially MMO's, store their installers in the user profile or appdata (eve online did this to me)

Uninstall unneeded or unwanted windows components and programs as well.

Run ccleaner daily to clear out your internet history/cookies. I regularly clear out 500MB+ per day off my own machine just from browsing.

^This. I wouldn't put my pagefile on a separate drive, though; it probably won't make a difference with 8GB of RAM, but in the rare event that you do use the pagefile, it will operate much faster if it's on your SSD.

ok I reallocated my page files to 2-2.5GB...checked my SSD and it's up from 14-15.8GB used now -.-...I literally did NOTHING! Windows performed some updates or somethnig but I didn' think it would do THAT much more data

Here's another confusing part about all of this...I know there's some behind the scenes files that aren't visible...but seriously, 3gb????

What would getting rid of the hybernation mode do to the laptop? I like to put it to sleep every now and then but I don't care for the hybernation mode...let me know if it affects any other options

Page file works different in Windows 7. You have to move it to another driver to make the effect you're after.
