SSD losing all space while installing on other drive

Hey guys,

Had this issue recently. While installing to my 1TD D: , it seems some sort of temp files are being dumped on my C: which is my 60GB SSD with windows 7 installed. I only have 1.5gb left on it and all of this gets drained whilst installing a program which will lead to some installation error.

As soon as I quit the installation all my 1.5gb instantly appears again. This is also only getting through 30-40% of the install sometimes.

I can't really free up my C: any more but I don't recall having this issue that long ago.

Any tips?

Thanks.

Hi mate, welcome to CF, set a system restore point and then do the following:

  1. Go to Control Panel\System and Security\System and click on Advanced System Properties.
  2. Click on the Advanced Tab and then on Settings button within the Performance Section.
  3. Click on Advanced tab within Performance Options and under Virtual memory select Change.
  4. Uncheck the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
  5. Select your Windows drive (60GB C: I assume)
  6. Then click on the No paging file radio button.
  7. Now click on the 1TB hdd and select Custom Size.
  8. Make both inital size (MB) and Maximum Size (MB) the same or slightly higher than the recommended amount below that.
  9. Click on Set.
  10. Select OK several times and restart when requested.
  11. When you have finally restarted, download CCleaner from here.
  12. Run it to remove junk files.
  13. Restart once more and your SSD should be looking a lot healthier in regards to free space.

Let me know how you go.

Thanks for your help, I felt like an idiot asking haha.

Unfortunately this didn't fix the problem and I'd already run CCleaner in the past.

I just don't understand why I need at least 1.5gb at the 35% installation mark on the drive I'm not even installing to?

hmm

Have you moved the page file? If so, follow the same directions but go to System Protection and change how that is working. Its likely that either the page file or shadow copy, system restore etc is eating up your SSD. Move it all to the 1TB.

Turns out I didn't have any restore points or a page file set for the C:. I managed to cleanout some update backup files for another 2.5gb and now my C: has dropped to 150mb during install and stayed there allowing it to finish. Is this a thing that always happens with installations and I just never noticed before?

What other files do you have on your SSD? A fully current Win7 only takes around 30-35GB - you should have plenty to spare. What size is your System Restore folder? Most people who use SSDs actually turn SR off to cut down on the amount of writes.
