I have been having slow start-ups and shut downs for several months. I got a blue screen on start up and it said stage 1,2 and 3. I waited for it to go through a disk checkig process. It sais it was complete. I waited and nothing seemed to be happening. I pushed the little round button and kept it depressed. This shut it off. Then when I try to start up I get a blue screen flash and then it goes off. I am planning on buying a new laptop. Is there any possibility of saving this one? It is now 7 years old and has XP.

The hard drive might have issues. Download the HDD diagnostic from the manufacturer and test the hard drive.
