Stand by mode

I have been having problems with my standby mode lately. I go to put it in standby mode manually and my computer keeps coming back on without me touching anything. The only thing that I did was hook up a new mouse and went from an optical mouse to one that has a ball on the bottom and not sure if that has anything to do with it. Can anyone help me?

I would assume you have a program that keeps turning on mid "sleep" and this brings it out.. What programs are running in the background?
 
I usually turn everything off that I am running when I want to put it in stand by mode and disconnect from the internet
