Hello.

I have a Mobo and a case here with no instructions for either.

I consider myself a novice and am a little lost...

Is there any set of instructions either you can tell me or are on online for which Case plugs (i.e. the front, power button, reset button, usb, etc...) goto to which Mobo things?

Thanks

There's no real set standard for those. You just need to refer to your motherboard manual. Have you checked on the manufacturer's website?

There are no specific guidlines except seen in the user manual that comes along with the board itself. That will explain more in words then pictures. The first thing to do is get familiar with the board itself like where are the pci slots? Those have to be lined up with the pci slot openings in the case where tabs are either popped out or twisted out.

2)You look at the holes found on the board itself for mounting.
3)Make sure the case is the right type by seeing if the inside is large enough like a standard atx or is it a micro atx only taking a small micro atx board.
4)Make sure you have the right size mounts as well as fastening screws namely the hardware that comes along with retail not OEM boards.
5)Be familiar with specifications of hardwares supported and compile a list of things like video card after cpu. memory, power supply, cooling if not included or improved, and type of case. gaming. average mid tower, micro atx, or maybe a server or full tower.

Most of the front panel info are printed on the motherboard, you just have to decipher what the abbreviations mean, like PWR is power and sometimes the ATX power switch is called SOFT PWR. You just have to use some logic and common sense.

The user manual that comes along with boards will have a diagram there for plugging things in. Getting familiar with where things go will be the first step after the board has been mounted properly. As elitehacker has mentioned the abbreviations found on the board will be indication in the diagram as well for wires coming in from the front or top panel(some gaming cases like NZXT for instance). The power led will be pled or pwr led depending on how that is abreviated. HD led is the hard drive activity indicator. rset is for the reset button on the front or top panel.

Verifying and getting familiar with each item going onto the board is a must as well as later verification to insure that all connections are plugged in like the main power connector, 12v cpu feed plugged in near the cpu socket, dimm slots, AGP or PCI-E video card, pci slots for sound card(optional) or other pci type expansion cards, etc..

In case you don't have the manual or any hard copy documentation, you should first google it and if that yields no result rely on the info printed on the motherboard.

What make and model is the board? That will help track down the downloadable pdf file at the support site. You will need Adobe reader installed to open it or that prompt will come up for installing the free document reader.

You should find some pins on lower right corner with the word (nearly) PWR, HDD LED, RESET etc.

And for USB, you should find at least a group of pins labelled USB1, USB2,.. If the connector is not grouped (one-by-one), it should go like this:
1st line: VCC, D(ata) - (1), D(ata) + (1), GND.
2nd line: VCC, D(ata) -(2), D(ata) + (2), GND.

At least if you post that information here it will be a help for someone here to help out by locating the information and perhaps board diagram in the original manual. On most boards you will find the two blocks of pins for the front or top panel for pled, hdled, reset at the lower right corner if you look at the board with the pci slots on the left side under the APP or PCI-E slots. The usb block is found above the panel connections for the front or top usb ports.
