Start a website

I am thinking about starting up a website. I was just wondering if anyone knows what i need to do to get it started. I wanted to start a forum like this one but for a computer program called revit.

Any info would help.
 
You'll need to decide whether you want to host the forum yourself, which will require a webserver supporting PHP and MySQL, or have it hosted by another company (usually ad-supported). www.invisionfree.com is one of many websites that will host your forum for free. If you do want to host it yourself, you can download a free package like phpBB. A free redirectional from somewhere like http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ or a paid web address would be a great idea as well.

This forum has been created using vBulletin, but that's not cheap.
 
vBulletin is around $80 but really worth it.

Im guessing this will be your first forum. So you should start of with something free, i recommend phpBB.

If your forum goes really well, you can move over to vBulletin or another software such as IPB. Database is easily transferable in vBulletin, dont know about IPB.

So phpBB is a good one to start off with? Do anyone recommend any other free ones?

I really dont know that much about starting a forum. I am a member of another forum and think that it can be setup better.
