Start up managers for vista

Hi are there any programs that allow you to manage the applications that start when you turn vista on?

I used to use Startup Mechanic on XP but it is not compatible with vista.

Reason I ask is windows defender is SO annoying. Anyone know how to disable that by the way?

Jon

p.s. must be free

Start>Run; Type "msconfig.exe"; go to the "Startup" tab; uncheck what you don't like.

edit: Defender can be disabled by opening it in the control panel and going to "Tools" in the top left.

You can also use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/download/) to disable startup items.

I also forgot that Run isn't in Vista's start meny by default, so just search for it if you don't know where it is.

Thanks I will check out this CCleaner. I not gonna use that msconfig thing as I was told its intended purpose was a tool for diagnostics not to manage your startup programmes. Not that that matters but its not easiest programme to use.

Thanks

Jon

jon msconfig isnt a program its a tool built into windows xp and vista. I use it all the time just go to your search bar in vista if you havent added the run command and type msconfig then to go the start up tab and simply uncheck what you dont wnat to use its not hard and its so easy even a cave man can do it its just a few clicks of the mouse and a restart and it works just fine i have used it ever since i got xp...

I use MSCONFIG as well. However you can go into your start menu and customize it. Check the 'Run' and you'll now have the run command on your start menu.

few things,

Under MSCONFIG you can disable windows defender under the startup tab. actually, with vista, i don't think you can truly disable Defender. i think its integrated within the OS or something. you can also disable the automatic scans that Defender tries to do under the Tools menu as well (if thats what you don't like about it).

another thing is, Windows Defender itself does exactly what u want (it is a program startup manager). To get to this: (open Defender, go to Tools, then click on Software Explorer). Defender even gives you information about each startup program.

but, if u end up using MSCONFIG to monitor you startup programs, i wouldn't use Defender. use one or the other.

what is Defender doing that you don't like?

I know what MSCONFIG is lol, I used it all the time in XP, just don't want to use it now.

And it windows defender IS NOT what I want. Every time I turn my computer on it blocks the software that connects to the internet. A program that I would like would allow you to make your own changes. i.e. if I want it to run I can stick it in an allow list.

As for disabling it, I tried that already it does not work. Even when I un-check every box AND click disable. It still blocks programs at startup nothing even changed.

Thanks

Jon

Try disabling the real-time protection in windows defender. go to tools in defender and scroll down. uncheck all of the options within Defender. dont forget to turn off the administrative options too. thats also in the Defender options.

MSCONFIG can disable services as well, startup managers dont.

Anywho, I use Tune-Up Utilities 2007, which has a built in start-up manager.

How do you add the run command? =/

You add the Run shortcut by right-clicking the start button and going to properties. I can't double-check the exact path right now because this box doesn't have admin privaleges, but it's somewhere in the options for customizing the start menu in there. Pretty self-explanatory.

To the thread-starter:

If your Windows Defender won't turn on or off, try this:

I couldn't get mine to turn back on and that worked for me.
