Sorry if this is a too familiar problem but my desk top has just develpoed a problem. Switching on it seems normal, brief flashes of text detailing aspects of the computer, then long broken line along bottom of screen, then the Windows XP symbol for a couple of seconds but then the screen goes blank then atext appears saying "NO SYNC" BEFORE THE WHOLE THING STARTS AGAIN.
Problem appeared without warning, no new programmes etc installed, I have anti virus protection. The PC is a few years old so I suppose something could just have worn out.
I would be dead grateful if anyone could suggest how I might proceed.

Not sure maybe it is a corruption on the HD you may be able to reformat and reinstall windows or you may need a new HD

Get into the safe mode (F8 a few seconds after pressing the power button and then safe mode w/ networking) and try whatever comes to your mind - disk cleanup, ccleaner, modify boot settings etc.
If safe mode doesnt work then your HDD is dead.
And if you tried everything but still no success just save your personal files from c:/ to a flash drive/dvd and try reinstalling XP.
