Start Up slow from new McAfee software?

Hey, im new here and i have a question.

I got my computer about a year ago (HP Pavillion dv4000, XP Pro SP2, Intel Pentium M Processor, 2 GHz, .99 GB RAM) and till now its been amazing! Running perfectly!

About 2 weeks ago i installed McAfee Total PRotection. Ever since then, my start up has been slow. Prior to McAfee it took 2 or 3 minutes total. But now from when i login to windows it takes 5 to 7 (not too long, but im not a very pacient guy ;) ).

Im not totally sure whether its the mcafee, but when i installed it the startup has been slow.

So could anyone please tell me anything i can do (maybe in the settings in the software or sutmhing) to make it faster?

McAfee is already on the lower end of the food chain for system protection. But one reason for a sudden drag on startup could be from something in the software not being installed fully or some crosslink to system files. Apparently you haven't seen too many new programs added in a year's time. Slowdowns on system are usually caused by clutter from leftover or orphanned registry values when uninstallers leave stuff behind.

The msconfig utility is one way to disable anything actively running from starting up along with Windows. To open the selective startup options you start the system utility by typing msconfig at the Run prompt and press enter or click the ok button to see the new screen appear. The startup and services tabs on the right side are the items of interest since you will find entries for any antivirus or other security program in both. Just remember to select the "hide all microsoft services" option with a check mark.

So i should uncheck everything that goes with McAfee?
 
I ran McAfee some time back and literally threw the disk away. What a piece of garbage! At the opposite end of the retail line is Trend Micro's PC-cillin. No complaints here when given a 30day test run. A built in personal firewall accompanies not only antivirus protection but other spyware and adware bug blasters.

For freewares AVG 7.5, Spyware Terminator, and still AdAware SE Personal only see the typical tracking cookies here despite some extended web searches for product information, prices compared on different hardwares, and other things like system utilities.
 
I am using Avira Antivir for many years. I never felt system slow down.
Further, I found that this software identifies known viruses even before
a file is copied to the hard disk. Do you know of any other antivirus
having that provision?

Recently before seeing the final version of IE 7 available AVG came to life when a trojan was copied to the root of the hard drive upon coming across a new site during a web search. It went right through the security filtering seen on the older browser. AVG was totally disabled from starting up along with Windows at the time and sprung to life with an alert pointing out just where the file was along with it's name. But no one program even AVG or any other is ever 100%! No matter which one you have "something" can always get past it. Recommendations? Be familiar with several!
 
If your'e staying with Mcafee then disable Spamkiller and Privacy Service, see how that improves your start time.
 
A few other things besides even McAfee can slow a system down. When was the last time you defragmented your hard drive? Never? File fragmentation over a lengthy period of time, unnecessary startup items found in the msconfig utility startup and services groups alike, plus leftover and now invalid entries in the system registry will bind things up.

There are a few freewares for cleaning things up that see high ratings. For the system registry itself RegCleaner works on all versions of Windows from 95 to Vista. http://www.dewassoc.com/support/useful/regcleaner.htm

Another rather newer freeware known as the "crap cleaner" cleans up temp folders leftover from software installers, browser histories, and other useless items lingering on the drive taking up space. http://www.ccleaner.com/
