Anyone hear of this virus before ? How serious is it ? I used their uninstall link to get rid of it but how can I be sure it didn't install anything else ? Malwarebytes and McAfee scans show no problems.

Post a hijackthis log for me.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

I installed HijackThis and it created an icon on my desktop but when I click on the icon I get a message that hijack this is already running. The problem is that I can't find where it is running though ?

If you look in your taskbar for an icon, sometimes the windows themselves don't show up. Or open task manager and end task on hijackthis.exe and then click on the icon to run it again.

I did manage to do a scan but for some reason it can't create a log file or maybe it did, I don't know. In any case I don't know how to post the logfile . I did see the result of the scan , what would something suspicious look like in the log file ?

highlight and copy everything in that log and then click on copy, then come to the forum in your reply and click on paste and it will copy it there.

I don't know how to do any of this what you are asking me to do , sorry . I couldn't even highlight the log, let alone copy and paste it in the forum. Everything seems fine, maybe the hijack virus just uninstalled and didn't do anything further ?

Its really simple. When you ran hijackthis did it popup with a notepad log? If so then all you need to do is click on the edit menu, click on select all, click on the edit menu again, click on copy. Then come to forum and start your reply and right click the mouse and click on paste.

I can't tell if your system is totally clean unless I see the hijackthis log.

No it didn't popup with a notepad log .

Maybe this will provide some insight into the problem . Hijackthis popup " For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, Hijackthis may NOT be able to fix this ." Maybe this is the reason that I am having difficulty to copy and post the file in the forum ?

Then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on hijackthis to get the run as admin option to appear and click on it.

OK. Please open hijackthis and click on "do a system scan and save a logfile". If for some reason you get a error message about not being able to access the hosts file, then you will need to run hijackthis as admin. To do this, on some systems all you need to do is right click on the hijackthis icon on your desktop and click on "run as". If the "run as" option doesn't appear in the right click menu, then press and hold the shift while right clicking on the hijackthis icon on your desktop and then the "run as" option should appear in the right click menu.

I see the run as option but clicking on that only opens hijackthis and doesn't give an option to run as admin.

So when it opens, click on do a system scan and save a log file. Then copy everything in that log and paste it in your next reply.
