A) What is the best way to get rid of static electricity before operating with computer parts?

B) Have you ever had an accident with computer parts and static electricity?
 
Not aimed at a PC but...

I had a really fuzzy blanket on my bed about two years ago and when I was playing some Final Fantasy X on my PS2, I grabbed my controller and heard a loud "CRACK." It was static electricity and it ruined the controller.
 
A) You could buy a static wrist band. $5 isn't a bad investment concerning that most people spend >$750 on their computer.
B) Nope :)
 
a. esd bracelet or mat
b. yes, RAM, when I put it in it than proceeded to fry, thankfully the geek squad at best buy didn't catch it and I returned it..
 
The best way is to use an antistatic wristband but, touching the case is just as good.

I have never damaged a part by static but, a friend of mine used a vacumm to clean out his fans and damaged his motherboard.
 
A. As people have already mentioned,bracelet or mat.

B.Nope never had any problems,i always put my hand on either the side of the case or the side of the Psu before i mess around with anything else anyway.
 
A. Plug the PSU in to the wall outlet and cut the main power switch off on it, and then touch the case or wear a bracelet

B. No, I do the above and wear a bracelet........I am not about to blow my $250 RAM
 
I dont think a screwdriver will work. The reason we are saying metal bracelets and metal cases it because usually they are grounded threw the wall outlet. Unless your plugging the screw driver into the outlet (not recommended)...

As for problems, I fried the top pci slot on my motherboard and my brother fried his soundcard. However, these could have been doa, I dont know, didnt bother sending them back for things we would never use. Not really, Im kicking myself, I wish I had my pci, and my brother had to buy a new sound card. :cry:
