i put in my product key than i click next than it says Steam is unavaible

"Steam server is unavailable. Your computer is either currently unable to reach the steam servers, or the service may be temporarily disabled. Please try again later."

If you are connected to the net, close down Steam (make sure it is closed on the taskbar too), then go to:

My Computer > C:\ > Program Files > Steam

Delete the ClientRegistry.BLOB file, then start up Steam again. It will recreate the file, which can take a minute or two, then log in and try again

According to Steam Support.
Call of Duty: Black Ops CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q

If your CD Key is in a different format, Steam will not be able to identify it.

I have exactly the same problem. just bought black ops. and right after i try enter the cdkey i get a message saying "your computer is either currently unable to reach the steam servers, or the service may be temporarily disabled. please try again later."
i tried deleting that blob file. didnt do anything. just made me have to update steam again. didnt solve the problem. and yes the cdkey is of that form.. plz somebody help :(

As it is affecting more than one person, I am going to assume it is a problem on Valve's end, not yours. Try again later today. If the problem persists for any more than 2-3 days, I would either create a post on the Steam forums, or open a ticket at the Steam website asking if anyone else has the problem, and if it is a known internal server issue
