STEAM games freeze on loading screen

At least Portal and HL2 Episode 2 just freeze on the first game loading screen (before getting to the menu) I cannot get out of this page via ctrl alt del or other key commands. I completely uninstalled STEAM and all the games and reinstalled to no avail. Also, tried disabling AV and firewall just in case that was the problem. I have no idea what to do.

Steam does have a lot of problems but i am not familiar with this one, update your drivers maybe?
