Steam Relocation Questions

P.I Dragon
So, i was just normally going through daily activities on ym PC when windows balloon thingy popped up and said i only had 142Mb left on ym C: drive, i thought it was lying but i went inspecting and it was true, no idea how that happened, anyway, i have a SLAVE 120Gb drive qwith only 20Gb being used, so ive been transferring large programs over to that one...

I was going through the list of programs, got to Steam, my god its big, lol, so my question is this, can i just uninstall and reinstall steam on a different drive, if so what is the installer file, i dont remeber installin it before, it jsut turned up when i instaleld a game, what will happen to my games now, will all saved games be lost etc....??

Thanks, any info would be great, dragon

ok, i will do that, but what about all my game data, will it move it all itself or will i have to sit there for 10 hours straigh updating every single game i ever bought and updated...?

There really isnt any reason in my opinion to have every game installed, i have about 15 games and i only have HL:2, CSS, DODS installed.

To answer your question, all you need to do is go to File > Backup Games, select what you want to backup, choose the location, and BAM!

ok, so after i backup the game files, how do i "out them into" the new steam on the other drive, is there like a "resotre from backup" option or what??

Once the backups are done, one of the files will be a .exe file, simply run it and it will install all your games back. Im not sure if you need steam to be installed first or not though.

ok, im backing up now, that sure does take a long time, ive currently got steam installed on both drives, the one on the new drive has picked up the ames from my steam account, and shows them as not installed, im backing them up from the steam on the old drive, its taking ages..... 7.8Gb of files to transfer, lol....

lol, i would just transfer the games i play most often, then re-download the other ones when you have a chance. BTW, did you choose CD or DVD format?

oh man, i chose DVD format, is that a problem, cos it finished the backup and i started the .exe file and it gets near the end and shuts itself down with the generic error of:

steamerror8qt.jpg

was i supposed to choose CD or am i supposed to burn those files to a DVD or what...?

dragon

ok, dnt worry (not that you were) got it sorted, i redid everything but selected CD instead of DVD, whats up with DVD, ah well, nevermind, done now, thanks
