stolen PC and password

Well, some sorry SOB decided that they needed my desktop computer more than I did. I have two questions....How hard will it be for the person to access my machine since Vista asks for a password at startup? I do not have an easy password. Also, is there a way to tell if that computer ever goes on line. I did not have any theft protection software installed on it. I did have my copy of vista registered. Just to add some info, I did not keep any account numbers or passwords in any documents on my machine. Thanks, D

well, its always easy to format a HD...and no, he probably wont be able to crack your password, cause vista's security features are so annoyingly effective that even if he did get the password, he'd get frustrated with the warnings and such.

so, id say he'll format the HD. watch local want-ads or something for your PC...if you know its specs, anyway.

Vista is very easy to crack. I often buy computers with password protected accounts for cheap, after they pass police checks. I can reset the password in about 10 seconds. For security reasons, however, I do not share my hacking secrets, and I won't do it for people unless they can provide their original receipt.

i really don't think a password would matter much to be honest.
they could just take out the hard drive, put it in a different pc as a 2nd drive, and then start browsing it.

did you report the theft to your local police department? be sure to keep an eye on any bill payment sites, bank account sites, and any other sites that you had the pc set to store login info for. especially if you had credit card or bank account info stored on it.

if you see any unauthorized activity, report it to the police. they could get the ip of the person who did the transaction and then get there address from the isp, and then arrest the person and you'd get your pc back.

unless it was stolen by someone with the sole intent of getting your personal stuff, i dont think you should be too worried. the average smash and grabber wouldnt have the knowledge to retrieve your personal info. just wondering, to what extent did you have personal info on your pc? just websites and stuff, or more than that? it might be a good idea to go and change your online passwords, just in case.
