Stopping the Bootup screen

I'm sure there's an easy answer but on the black bootup screen where it initialises the HD and USB etc, I'm sure I glimpsed an error momentarily before it continued the boot process.
Is there an easy way to halt bootup on this screen to give me chance to read it.

So it works???!

The BIOS usually reponds kindly to the pause button, and halts the startup process until you tell it to continue
