Strange Automatic Updates Issue

I've just cleaned up my friend's computer with Byteman's help; it had a trojan and some spyware. One thing is still puzzling the both of us though.

I can't turn on automatic updates, it's all greyed out, if you see what i mean, and i can't select any of the options. It's not a big deal it'd just mean i wouldn't have to rely on my friend to update himself. It's XP Home Edition with SP2, and if you need any more info just let me know.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.
