I'm using an ACER Aspire 5730Z and have been using it for 2 years without problems. However, about half a year ago, it started with this weird behaviour:
After a long time of running, it would become laggy and slower. I found out that this is caused by lots of ACPI Errors (I've seen them in the system log). Also I found out this ACPI is the power management technology of my baby. In these cases I would just restart and everything was fine.
However, then it entered Phase 2: At some point while restarting for this matter, it would not start again after shutting down. The light would be on for a few seconds, then a defeating discharge sound accompanied by the lights turning off. Then he would try again. The number of tries seems completely random, between 2 and 6 times, before it finally turned completely off. Of course the first time this happened I was horrified that it would never run again. I tried to comfort the battery and somehow I managed to turn it on again. Later I found a failsafe way to do this: I would plug off the power supply, get the battery out of the case and press the power button a few times (of course with nothing happening). Then plug everything back in, et voila, it rises from the dead.
This phase lasted until a week ago, but it happened not too often and so my being annoyed didn't outweigh my laziness to find out what's the problem. However, the frequency increased and right now I'm using my 'trick' right before every startup without even trying, because it most likely will be stuck. The ACPI errors come earlier now and it sucks to work with a laggy machine.
Then yesterday, while copying a huge file, the machine just turned off, accompanied by that nasty discharging sound. I was horrified. I waited a day and when I turned it on again, there was just a black screen with a blinking cursor. I tried it again and - hooray - it worked, but the problem still persists and I'm really afraid of these sudden deaths.
So what I'm guessing is that the power supply is broken, but I'm not sure and I don't even know where I can get spare parts (ACER seems to be suspiciously not supporting their own model).
Any ideas or condolences?
