Strange PC Problems

Hi,

I have a Foxconn C51 motherboard and there are some problems which I cant quite put my finger on. Basically my PC seems to be dead! There is a LED on the motherboard showing that there is power going into it but when I press the power switch on the front panel nothing happens. The PC does not start up at all and remains dead. I have tried swapping all the connectors around for the front panel but still nothing is happenning. What is strange is when I plug in the HDLED lead onto the space it meant to go the light on the PC's HARD DRIVE light shows up as bright red. Does this mean that I have plugged in the leads wrong? Is there anyway to boot up the PC without pressing the power switch on the front? I thought the PSU was dead as I was experiencing no light on the Motherboard to show that there was power so I went and brought a new PSU and the new one shows the LED on the mobo but still not start up.

Is it the motherboard or the Front Panel Connectors?

It's probably just the power switch. You can short the pins that the power switch leads are supposed to connect to to test it.

If you want to make sure the PSU starts up, disconnect it from the PC (just unplug all the connections to the mobo, cd/hard drive/videocard, you can leave it in the case). Then get a paperclip or some wire and stick it in the pin with the green wire and stick the other end into the pin of any black wire. If the PSU fan turns on it's working.
 
how do I short the pins on the motherboard?

sorry to sound silly but I have never dont anything like that before?

I did not think it was the motherboard either as it seems like there was something else, I will try the PSU trick you mentioned and await your advise regarding the shorting of the pins.
 
Just touch a screwdriver to both pins at the same time. To turn it off you will either have to shut down from windows or short the pins for 4 seconds.
 
just one more thing - I have got the PC to power up (Hurrah) however, it seems to get stuck on the black start up screen, it shows that my processor is a AMD Dual Core and then it freezes. I cant press anything or the Machine does not move on from here. Its the same screen where you are asked to press DEL to enter start up options. What causes this and how can I fix it pls?
