Strange Printer Setup

I have a new laptop with Windows 7 and wireless to a Netgear router, the printer is also wireless. I had an awful time setting it up because I do not really understand it, and the HP printer would not install on the HP laptop.
Although I can print from my laptop there is something strange going on, I would like to know what is happening.
If I go to “Devices and Printers” I find that there is an icon for the printer and an Icon for my Laptop. (+other devices) When I open the laptop Icon it is also for the printer and I find it works better if I set the Laptop Icon as the default for printing, if I set the printer as default it will not print when the printer goes to sleep. Could it be that the printer is communicating through 2 different routes? Can any network experts please answer this one.

Hi,

Ive seen a similar problem to this. There is an option for bidirectional support that can be found as follows:
Start => Devices and Printers => right click on your printer => select printer properties (you may need to click on the change properties with a administrator sign)=> click on ports.... There you will see an option to Enable bidirection support
 
Thanks, I will keep your reply noted, it took me so long to get it working I am reluctant to touch it while it prints OK. I did do a "sfc scan" and it showed no corruption violations. Bi-directional port seems to be set up but there are 2 ports listed only one enabled

After little research, It would seem that the WSD port is new to Windows from Vista on, this is in addition to the existing TCP/IP port, My printer is set up to go to eack port via the 2 different Icons, but I do not not know what is correct
