Strange problem with a partition

I'm having a weird problem with a parttion on my hdd. Its a 160gb and i made a partition of 26gb on it it a while ago so that i could try windows 7 and for a few months or so i succesfully had windows 7 on the 26gb and xp on the rest of the hdd in a dual boot. But today i decided that i wanted to try out ubuntu so i formatted the win7 partition to ext3 using gparted so that it would be ready for me to install ubuntu. But when i came to installing ubuntu the ubuntu installer wouldnt see the partiton atall so i went back into gparted to find that for some reason the partition is saying that there is about 600mb of space already used up on this partition.

I'm guessing this is the reason ubuntu isnt seeing it so i deleted it and made it again to find it did exactly the same again. Now i was very confused so i formated it to ntfs and went back into windows to see what it made of it. In windows it shows up as a drive as normal and it appears to be completally empty (it works perfectly normal i can read/write) but again there is space already being used (only 60mb this time) so i formatted it (again) using windows and its still the same.

It seems there is something on this partion that i cannot get rid of but i have no clue as to what it actually is or how to get rid of it.:confused:

Sorry for such a long post but does anyone have a clue whats going on?

Ok i just noticed something else wierd with it. If for example i put a file onto the hardrive the amount space used goes up (obviously) but then i delete the file and it goes. Well visably it goes theres nothing left on the hardrive if you were to look at it but the amount of space used stays the same and i would expoect it to go down:confused:
