Strange problem with laptop

I have an Acer laptop about 3 years old. It works fine sitting on my coffee table. However, every now and then, while sitting on my lap, the screen goes crazy, usually with vertical lines across it. Also, it happens sometimes when setting it down. The first time it happened was when I tipped it upside down to reset one of the rubber feet. If I squeeze it or bump it in the wrong place, I end up having to hold the power button down to shut it down. It's a royal pain. I had someone take it apart and couldn't find a loose connection.

There might be some interference, say, you might be running a large motor on the same circuit - but, that happens only if plugged into AC outlet and you mentioned that it did it when you tip the unit over. Hmmm....I must say you might have a liquid-crystal problem or you do have a connection problem that was overlooked.

You mentioned that if you squeeze (which you should not do) or bump (likewise) the LCD, you have to shut it down. When this happens, does the image freeze and/or strange blotches appear? You might consider replacing your LCD.

Verify that it is your LCD by plugging in an external monitor into the laptop. If it does this on the external monitor, then you might have a integrated video problem. If it doesn't do this when you plug the external monitor in, you know the display is bad. The display is replaceable, so you will not have to throw out the whole laptop. However, if it is an integrated video problem, then, unfortunately, you will have to do that if it is out of warranty and the cost doesn't justify replacement.
