Strange XP Lockup from User Profile Choice Window

I have a desktop running XP pro on an Intel 2.4 quad mb that is exhibiting strange behaviour. I have two profiles on the computer for me and my wife. When either of us finishes a session, we click Start, Log Off, Switch User to return to the User Profile Choice screen. The problem is that after about an hour, the machine will display my wife's profile desktop minus icons, and it is locked up. I have to reset the computer to get back in.

This just started a few days ago, and I can't think of anything I did that would cause something like this. I do not have Norton, so can't blame that:-).

Any thoughts, oh wise ones?

See if just logging out will help. Logging out is better for your pc than switching user anyway. Switching user leaves all the running processes in the other user running. Puts more of a load on your pc.

This started a few weeks ago and I can't remember anything specific. I did notice that my secondary SATA drive is getting an error in the bios startup under the Smart diag listing. I'll run diags on the drive and see what that does.

I left the computer on all day today without logging off and the computer did not lock up.

I ran diags on the Maxtor Diamondplus HD and it failed, so I pulled it and let the computer run all night. Lo and behold, no lockup!

Hopefully, problem solved!

Thanks for everybody's help!

Agreed! My main drive is a WD...I just happened to have the Maxtor in a drawer, so I thought I'd drop it in. WD all the way!

Booo! Just kiddin :D I support WD all the way too!

WD and Seagate are like Toyota and Honda fans. If there were no such thing as WD, you'd go Seagate. And Seagate fans say the opposite :P
