strangest problem

All right, so it started a few days ago, the Vista comp in my sig would boot up, go through the windows loading screen, and then stop displaying. I could hear the sounds, so the computer is ok, just no display. I booted into safe mode which worked, disabled the driver, reinstalled it, and rebooted. same problem. I popped in a new hard drive with a fresh install of XP pro, no drivers. It worked fine with no drivers, I installed the Omega drivers based upon an older version of Catalyst (8.3 i think), and as soon as i installed the drivers and rebooted it works fine. Device manager says driver is fine. I only have this problem when in install drivers-doesn't matter which version, any driver.

Where are you installing drivers from? The driver CD or the ATi/NVIDIA website?

On my vista comp, I downloaded the latest ones from the website, uninstalled the previous ones, reinstalled them. When that didn't work, I booted into safe mode and installed drivers from olddrivers.net, version 7.something. When that didn't work, I booted into a fresh install of XP and installed the latest Omega drivers. Still no dice.
