If his data is backed up do a fresh install. If not, try copying all this documents into a USB key or external HD then do a fresh install.

That's the quickest and easiest way.

yeah i think that would be the most easy way but i am not shure if he has his XP key info and cd's and such. i am going to back up all his personal stuff thoe and try and push a fresh install on him but if he cant find/get his copy of XP what do you do in a situation like this

You might want to try taking the hard drive out and slaving it to another system and running a virus scan on it using AVG Free edition. I've had to do that in the past before being able to run any malware programs like Malwarebytes.

thats a good idea i never thought of that but his computer is a laptop how do i slave a laptop HD

If his hard drive is a SATA you should be able to hook it up to one that already has sata ports. If its IDE then you will need an 2.5" to 3.5" converter to connect it to a desktop system.

Unfortunately, even if you did slave the HD, there is not a 100% chance any of the specified programs will find, disable, and/or delete the problem(s). If you are against reinstalling the OS, then by all means, give it a try, but if it easy enough to backup your personal (and safe, I presume) files and get your hands on an OS disc, I suggest you start anew.

Best of luck though. : )
