Student Buying Laptop. Help?

Yeah that'll be a good machine, but I'd also recommend the Dell Latitude series notebooks. I have an E6500 myself and love it to death. Nice Core2Duo P8600 and 4GB of ram. Thing flies. They're also very durable. My friend has the same laptop and he has dropped it hundreds of times and it has yet to break.

I would recommend getting one with more hard drive space. I am in the engineering field too so memory is needed a lot. What type of engineering are you doing?

Asus is the way to go for performance-oriented laptops. The battery life on that monster will probably suck, though. That's usually the case with gaming laptops.

yikes! latitudes and inspirion notebooks get HOT, i've serviced a couple that were shutting down only because of a little dust in the airflow tracks. I've cleaned out other makes (hp and compaq most notibly) that were FULL of dust, cat hair, etc and still ran cool (but a little noisy)

If you're looking for something to last you through school get something with 2 fans and rubber feet atleast 1/4" high, these simple things will keep the computer running better and longer!

What latitudes are you talking about? I've owned several and they've always run perfectly cool.

And as far as dust, hair, etc. ANY laptop will run hot when the heatsink is clogged. If you don't take care of your laptop then of course it'll overheat and shut down!
