ok, so, now ive sort of got the other machine working...im switching my HD to that machine, only, when i go to boot, the windows xp screen starts to fade into view, and the system restarts. any ideas?

forgot to add that it wont shut off unless i pull the power cable

Ill bet it will shut off if you hold the power button for 4-6secs. You dont have to pull the plug.

the PSU is brand new, its started to boot with this one before, and i dont have another one ballsy enough to test this mobo with

i dont think so. you can hold it forever and it wont shut off

Ok well I think that the mobo might be the best bet right now, but have you checked all the IDE connections and power dongles?

and CNR in what reference?

ok, ok, im an idiot....the 12v wasnt plugged in, thanks for the reminder!!
and by CNR i mean a slot on a motherboard...this for example
