Stupid Question

I don't post much, but I'm 28 and have had a computer since I was 5, have built computers and remember when 3.5" disks were cool...

With that out of the way... I'm not a programmer and I have a stupid question...

Is there a way to make a file unformattable?

say you partition your drive into system and data. you could format the system partition leaving the data intact...

however, a low level (hardware) format will wipe everything on the disk.

your question is weird, why would you need an unformattable file?

i'm thinking you're trying to get rid of the file extension e.g. .txt, .mpg, etc.

if so you can go into tools, folder options, view & uncheck hide file extensions, or something like that. then when it's visible you can rename the file and delete the extension. it'll give you an error, but the file will be unidentifiable.

have fun hiding your pr0ns. :P

yes, I have a new micro HDD 500gb. It came with software that is very useful. I saved it all, long formatted the drive and moved the data back as hidden read only in case i need it later. I just wanted a short cut to keep the data in case i needed to reformat in the future, and i was curious.
