Stupid Questions (core 2)

Okay, I know I’ll embarrass myself with these questions but I'm gonna ask them anyway since nobody knows who I am ;-)

What does “core 2” actually mean? Does it mean there are 2 cores on 1 processor? Or does it mean there are physically 2 processors?

Actually Core 2 is the family sort of thing.
Because first there was like the old ones, then the Pentium line.
Now the Core 2, which is the second line sort of.
Because if you read the box:
Core 2 Duo, Duo is what signifies the two cores.
Core 2 Quad, again, Quad signifies what it is, otherwise by your saying:
Core 2 Quad is 2 Quad cores. Make sense?
But yes, the Duo is 2 cores in 1 processor and Quad 4.

sorry really what dirty said but in 10 lines?
 
Actually, the cores really are the processors so a 2 core unit does have two processors. The difference is they share the same I/O whereas two separate processors would have independent I/O. The I/O is certainly a limiting factor in performance so a 2 core processor won't compete with a server with two seperate processors, as an example. However it will handle the internal processing faster than a single core because it has two cores that work in tandem with each other.

Core 2 is Intel's name for the current crop of microprocessors. The earlier crop was called Pentium and the next crop is called Core i7.
