stupid resolution problem

my dad called me from his office telling me he plugged his 10 year old windows 98 computer into a new 17" monitor. he went into the settings and set it to 1280x1024. after restarting the computer, its giving him a black screen saying it can't display a picture..that the monitor is set to run in 1280x1024. the problem is weird in that it should be running in what he apparently told it to be..

anyway, i told him to reboot in safe mode, and try to lower the resolution from there. his display settings wouldnt let him change anything in safe mode. He hadn't installed the drivers that came with the monitor, so i told him to put in the disk, but aparently his disk drive wasn't working, or being read by windows. (also a safe mode issue?) Anyway, ive dealt with similar problems like this...but i feel like i really need to be there playing with it myself to fix the problem. i cant think of what to do just dictating it over the phone. Maybe I should just tell him to hit the monitor's auto-adjust button?

hmm..nevermind. the problem seems to be solved. i told him to plug in his old monitor and then change it..which worked. can windows 98 just not handle 1280x1024?

maybe it's the video card in the system. same problem happened with my windows ME but i put it back to regular setting in safe-mode. the display says it can go alot higher then it really can it went to like 1800 x something and i was like impossible and i clicked apply and soon i had ur problem.

good thing u figured it out :)

Yes it your video card. I had a VERY old Kenitec monitor.. it displayed the 1024x768 SIDEWAYS~ but it was reallythe cheap card...
