Subnet- quick question

Shoot- I took my router to my grandma's over Christmas. Before I left I had a subnet of 255.255.255.0.

I left my server plugged in, and returned to a subnet of 255.255.248.0.

Is there a way to get back the 255.255.255.0? I need it so I can have more then five wireless devices.

The isp assigns it do they not?

Or am I able to just declare it myself?

I've never tried that. How would I know what to set my IP to?

You're referring to the external IP which is controlled by the ISP, what you're asking to change is the internal IP. Go into the network connections page, go to the adapter properties for the NIC you're using, and change the TCP/IP settings.

No, I want to change the external one. Our ISP used to give us a 255.255.255.0 IP, but now its 255.255.248.0. Is there a way to change that?

You sure it's not your router specifically that holds the subnet mask you want to change? Are you looking at the router config page or the modem config page?

Not quite sure. How would I access the modem config page?

I am looking at the router page right now.

Then just change your router subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. That's not assigned by the ISP.

Weird. At my grandmothers I couldn't change it or none of the computers would work?

But here it does?

Maybe I did something wrong there.

Thanks guys.
