Sudden Restart

No one seems to be able to figure out my problem (microsoft tech support has no idea).

While surfing (IE) I will click on a link (it seems to be about one in every 20-25, completely random) and my computer will suddenly restart. No warning. It is like I pressed the restart button.

It's not a virus.

I configured the automatic shutdown to give me an error message. All I got was "BAD_POOL_HEADER" and something about dumbing physical memory ???

It doen't happen when the computer is not on the net.

Not doing any file sharing. :confused:

Probably power supply related. I'd try new drivers first, bios updates if possible, things like that, but yeah, I'm leaning more towards your PSU...
 
from articles, it sounds like hdd issue. but other articles have the same problem, with regards to other things like games.. etc.. and it can be the service pack issue also. are you using SP2?

there is an article about the BAD POOL HEADER error a couple of scrolls down. but it doesn't seem to provide anything relevant if you want to read up on it.

Thanks for the list. I have tried the stuff there with no success.

I have looked at the event viewer and this is the message I got.

Warning:

Your computer has automatically confiured the IP address of the Network Card with the network address .......


Error:

The server did not register the DCOM within the required timeout.

The rest of the messages are info only.

Baffled???
 
Thanks for your suggestion. I am running xp home and the hot fix is for Windows 2003. The microsoft guy says it won't work (on hold for 1 hour and tranfered 4 times:eek: ).

Is Norton to blame?!??

wow. im surprised you actually called. hopefully it was toll free.

i dont think norton is to blame? was it somehow related to the problem? if so please explain.

well, it seems the be like an internal problem. something with your hardware... and again i am kind of thinking that it can be because of service pack 2. if you are willing, you can try uninstalling service pack 2. if it resolves the issue or not, you can reinstall it again.
 
I uninstalled norton and it did not fix the problem.

I will try the service pack. And let you know.

sounds to me too like your cpu is overheating , remove the case and you cpu fan and give it a good clean , also put some new gel in between the cpu and the fan before you put it back or it will frazzle , you can get it for less than a pound
 
Thanks for that I will give it a try. But if it is overheating why are the shut downs only happen on the net and only as soon as a site is accessed???

By the way it is not norton or SP2????
 
This might not do anything at all, but it won't hurt.

Open IE. Click Tools, Internet Options, Settings.
Set your disk space allocator to 5MB. Click OK.
Click Delete Files. Tick the box to delete all offline content. Click OK.

Another thing that comes to mind is a problem with your physical memory. If you are using more than one chip, i.e. two 256MB chips, try using only one. Once you either duplicate the problem, or decide you can't, switch chips & test again.
 
So far I have had no problems since I reduced the size of my disk space allocator to 5MB.

Though it has taken a break and come back in the past.

Tried everything with no luck.

Don't want to re format my hard drive but it may be the only option.

No one ever heard of this before??

Anyone us "sympatico" and experiance this problem???
 
ok, had the same problem......its aeither a dodgy RAM stick or the latencys are too vicious to run at, check the bios to see, and set it to auto, take each stick of ram out at different times to see which one "might" be faulty....
